Investing in the right individuals
Dag Hammarskjöld, one time Secretary–General of the United Nations, once said, “It is more noble to give yourself
completely to one individual than it is to labour diligently for the salvation
of the masses”.
Supporting Hammarskjöld’s view, the Pareto Principle implies that that 20% of
the people on your payroll could account for 80% of your turnover; and the key
to the development of your manpower today, is identifying those
“twenty-per-centers” “the critical few”
on your payroll, those with the potential to justify the cost of intensive
development. That is the first step
in the design and development of focussed training interventions – identifying
those “critical
few” who’s potential justifies
focussed development, the people whose qualities warrant investing in.
